Four facts about the new USB Type C

Technology is evolving at breakneck speed, which means manufacturers are under constant pressure to produce new and easy-to-use connection devices that can deal with faster transfer capabilities.

The latest answer to handling these increasing demands is USB Type-C. The newest addition to the USB lineup, USB Type-C is unlike its predecessors, USB 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1, in terms of both its physical shape and functionality.

Whether it’s for charging a device or replacing the headphone jack on handsets, USB Type-C is set to replace the older types and become the default connection for all devices. Here are four reasons why the demand for this new connection type is soaring:

1. Ever faster speeds

USB Type-C is a clear upgrade in terms of connection speed, capable of managing demanding transfer speeds and capabilities that users now expect in their business and social lives.

2. Easy to use

Unlike its predecessors USB 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1, Type-C not only features an advancement of connection speeds, but also sees a physical modification to the hardware itself. This change to the shape of the connector brings with it an answer to the ever frustrating problem of which way to insert the USB into the port. Type-C is reversible, meaning it’s easy to insert.

3. More devices are ready

While many devices on the market still feature Type-A and Type-B ports, an increasing number of devices are now gradually replacing these older technologies with Type-C. These include the Apple MacBook, HP Spectre and ThinkPad as well as many Android smartphones including the Microsoft Lumia 950, Google’s Nexus 5X and 6P and the LG V20.

4. Type-C replaces 3.5mm headphone jacks

Devices such as Apple’s iPhone 7 have started to abandon the older 3.5mm connector used for headphones. USB Type-C is the popular accompaniment to such devices because its flatter shape makes it easier to use on thinner devices instead of the bulkier 3.5mm jack connector.

Additionally, the 3.5mm jack connector could only transmit sound, whereas a pair of USB-C headphones can play high quality music and do other things, such as measuring a user’s heart rate and feeding that information back to their phone at the same time.
